Pen knifes are nice because you can snap off the tip and have a fresh blade when the need arises. Exacto knives have long been the hobby standard. I keep at least two handy, and when worn rotate a new #11 blade into one and make the other the utility knife. There are also numerous other blade types available. The scapulae works well on curved surfaces, and the fine tooth saw makes quick work of cutting soft brass or plastic stock.

I have found that number drills from 1 to 80 are indispensable when it comes to all forms of scratch building. They are sized between normal fractional drills, and step up in increments by as little as .001". That gives you a much greater option finding the optimum drill for the size hole needed. General makes the small set. The larger set is by "Blue Point" (a Snap-On brand I bought off the tool truck for convenience), but Sears and others sell them as well.

Exacto saws are usefull for cutting plastic or wood. The small one is fine toothed, and the larger coarse. The mini-miter box helps keep the cuts square and true.

Here's some handy tools needed for guide flags. This guide flag threader is needed to extend the threads on a guide flag properly. There are several different threaders available, this one is by Backtrack (Guide Buddy). While we're doing the guide flag, the guide flag tongue often times needs to have the hole enlarged slightly to allow the guide flag to move freely. A reamer is very handy for enlarging a hole gradually. Be careful when enlarging the post hole. You want the guide flag to move freely but not be loose. Another handy tool is a 3/32" reamer. This reamer is used whenever you have a wheel or gear that doesn't fit onto an axle. The wheel or gear usually has some small burrs around the set screw holes. The reamer gently removes the burrs so the wheel or gear fits onto the axle yet retain a good tight fit on the axle. I've even used this reamer to enlarge aluminum axle spacers which were made too small by the vendor. The reamer enlarges the spacers so they easily slip onto an axle. The 3/32" reamer shown was available at Buena Park Raceway. Keith
