I held a drivers meeting prior to the '80 NASCAR race this past Sunday. The purpose was to let all the racers know that the new racing class, 2000-2012 Sprint Cup cars, would allow some body trim modifications.
Because these bodies are very tall, the tire/wheel well clearance is exaggerated and does not look good. In order to make the cars appearance more acceptable and improve the car's handling by reducing the car's height, the following body trim modifications will be alllowed: The side panels and front end of the car can be trimmed up to the "skirt" line of the body.
While discussing this new rule, it was mentioned that this new racing class has very few model kits available. This is true.
It was suggested that we should expand this racing class by allowing '90-'99 bodies as well as the 2000-2012 bodies. The '90-'99 model kits are in abundance and will allow more variety for the builders/racers.
I agreed with those in attendance and immediately announced that our new racing class will be for any NASCAR 1990-2012 (present).
Trimming the side and front skirt of the body improves the appearance of the tire/wheel well look as well as decrease the excessive body height. This body modification will make these bodies competitive with the '90-'99 bodies which are more standard in appearance compared to the newer bodies. The '90-'99 bodies will have a body rule which limits trimming the side panels to no closer than 1/8" from the bottom door line.
Since we have yet to race this new class, I decided to allow 1990-2012 bodies for the upcoming Hardbody Nats.
This is a last minute change in the rules for this new racing class, so let your fellow hardbody racers know about this change before the Nats.
Thanks,
Keith
